Real needs of the nation exist. People are in a position where legislation such as raising the federal minimum wage and creating less debt-related twisting and racking of college students would be welcome, responsible federal legislative steps. But there's no GOP partisan sport to being responsible.

UPDATE: The last few paragraphs of the NY Times report set the tone for how the people of the nation might judge this fully contrived situation. "Hoist in their own petard" is an old saying, surviving until now for a reason.
