Here is the best that Elwyn Tinklenberg's own flak people can make of his situation - a need for an infusion of new blood into an otherwise moribund campaign:

Alana Peterson, Rep. Jim Oberstar's long-time political director, will officially join Tinklenberg's finance team Wednesday, the candidate said. Tinklenberg has also recruited local political organizer Marie McCarthy to mobilize his home district of Anoka County.

Campaign manager Anna Richey said, "We've always known that Rep. Bachmann is vulnerable, but now we are noticing a renewed interest among outside observers. Adding Alana and Marie sends a clear signal to the people watching this race: we have the means and the message, and we are gearing up to win."

And how new is the "new" blood?

There is a feel of sameness to things even with new faces taken onto staff.

And realistically, is this an indication that the Mesabi Hard Rock promoter is fading?

Is that revolving door turning perceptibly more slowly?

It is truly early to be saying that.

But, Elwyn, what about those polls?

Here is what we know: Ashwin Madia is moving and shaking, and looking more and more a winner. But he cannot win without support from DFL backers down the stretch. "If you have limited cash to bet, bet the stronger horse in the more favorable race," is an old racetrack adage.
