Absentee voting - Ramsey City Hall - SD35 special election - presuming there will be a primary.

Candidates for the vacancy could withdraw until the end of the business day, yesterday, so Ramsey's City Clerk in responding to an email noted that as a caveat, in writing yesterday:

[...] we won’t put any updates on the website until tomorrow morning [Wednesday, Dec. 16] when everything is finalized and we know that there will be a Primary for sure. I don’t look for any candidates to pull out – but . . . I guess you never know. Absentee voting is scheduled to begin Friday morning for the Primary; however, there is a chance with the such a short time period for printing that we may not get our ballots until Monday. So – as in the past, we will offer in-person absentee voting here at City Hall – reception area; however, it may not be until Monday and after. When we update our website tomorrow with election information – it will be under the elections tab.

This is posted, while the Ramsey main page is giving me an access error. Expect an update very soon, if I can reach the page, with the update linking to the election notices subpage.

________________UPDATE_______________
8:58 AM 12/16/2015 -- The primary information was not yet posted, but readers during the day should focus

http://www.ci.ramsey.mn.us/elections

The Governor's Writ of Special election is posted by Ramsey, here.

BOTTOM LINE: Readers can reasonably plan on voting, Republican Primary, absentee and in person at the Ramsey City Hall reception area, Monday, Dec 21, and onward, i.e., waiting until then to be more certain that ballots are printed and delivered to City Hall and available.

It appears the Democrats will not have a primary, with only one candidate having filed. Ditto, for the NORML candidate.

However, rely only on what the City Clerk posts, at the above link.

This is believed to not be a nonpartisan election, (where the top two vote-getters move on to a general election [as with County Board or Ramsey Council elections]), and instead one where if one of the two parties has multiple candidates filing, then that party will be on a primary ballot, without any requirement of party affiliation/approval by party insiders required for any properly registered voter to participate. Contact the city clerk or the county election office about if you are not registered or have changed address, but want to be registered and updated. That would be the step for anyone new to Ramsey and not yet registered as living here.

ABC Newspapers coverage of SD35, this link, for a cumulative listing of published items, each with a brief abstract of the full reporting.

It appears one potential candidate ABC reported, this link, has not filed, according to the official Secretary of State page. That page lists four candidates, with no indication of any of the four having exercised yesterday's "second thoughts" withdrawal grace period. If any reader knows why Personius did not follow up on filing, please leave a comment explaining it. Absent that, it appears either it was a change of mind, or not meeting a filing deadline with proper paperwork, including petition signatures (again see this SoS page).

Freedom Club.

This operation has a federal PAC, for which it must report.

The following is from opensecrets.org - at a subpage; here.

Individual donors gave 10 large ($200+) contributions to this PAC in 2015-2016.

METHODOLOGY: The numbers on this page are based on contributions from individuals giving $200 or more, as reported to the Federal Election Commission.

NOTE: All the numbers on this page are for the 2016 election cycle and based on Federal Election Commission data released on November 16, 2015.

In a comment to the earlier post about the Freedom Club's hit piece mailing, I speculated that Harold Hamilton might be involved, but he is not on that donor list.

This Freedom Club operation has maintained ongoing filings with the FEC since 1996, with this screen capture showing an origination with Robert P. Cummins (and leopards do not change their spots, not one iota), with Cummins giving an operating address in Eden Prairie then, before the operation's moving to live in a Champlin P.O. Box.

This earliest FEC filing screen capture:

Picking Champlin fits, a town that is a speed trap looking for a conscience. The town reminds me of Werner Herzog's film, "Aguirre, The Wrath of God," where a lost disoriented Conquistador band found itself floating on a raft down an Amazon tributary, and passed a native tribe on shore. Don Aguirre or another Spaniard asks a translator what are they shouting, the translator replying, per the English subtitling of the German film's language, "They're saying 'Meat, meat, the river brings us meat.'" Champlin has a comparable the-highway-brings-us-meat attitude to "policing" Highway 169, and ask Dennis Berg if you do not believe me.

Enough about Champlin. That donor list appears to be a bunch of no-names, readers correct that impression if wrong, and if those are the big-time movers and shakers of Minnesota, Minnesota is hurting.

Freedom Club has its website with a glitzy youtube video with bothersome lead-in music then showing a bunch of stuffed shirts behind the sling-some-mud-at-Abeler mailing, in the video the empty suits - well tailored each and every one - meeting and greeting, watch it and see the respect those folks and their mailers deserve. That is, respect from ordinary real people not in expensive suits feeling self important when swarming.

All the usual suspects. Not to be confused with The Queens Freedom Club, that's a different group. Although both groups seem a little full of themselves.

Quite a bit full of themselves actually, and watch the MN Freedom Club summer event of the two videos, instead of taking my word for it.

Behind Aplikowski, not likely supportive of Zach Phelps' NORML candidacy. Lots of patio images, folks holding glasses or having glasses on their table area. No splifs. Not these folks. And the one fellow, while golfing I was recruited ...

..............................................

For these Freedom Club folks I am reminded of how Janis Joplin sang in Kris Kristofferson's "Bobby McGee," i.e., "Freedom's just another word for nothing else to do ...". My take on Freedom Club. Nothing else to do besides mudslinging. And when not slinging mud at the likes of Jim Abeler, his suits are not ... us, he sometimes lets his hair grow, they are busy making videos of themselves. A perp list, online here. And did I say, full of themselves?

__________UPDATE_____________
That piece of work they did attacking Abeler, they had an image of Abeler with hundred dollar bills all around. Jim is Jim and these folks project themselves, in their videos, as the actual and cordial big bill players; as in the pot calling the clean kettle black.

Go figure. Aplikowski gets the hit-piece help from the big dollar players, so who is the GOP candidate of the people in the SD35 special election GOP side of things?

________FURTHER UPDATE_________
Besides fat cats sling mud as a bottom line theme, on that above noted donor list, none of those people are SD35 residents.

As to the state PAC the Freedom Clubsters maintain, that second PAC might have big donors from within SD35. But the general appearance, absent reader correction if in error, is that fat cats from outside the district want to bias our voting.

That is an unusual version of Minnesota Nice.

__________FURTHER UPDATE__________
Reader help is requested here. Who, what individual human or Citizens United type of "person" holds bulk postage permit 4190? It is the vehicle under which the anti-Abelier hit piece from the Champlin P.O. Box folks was mailed. Is it merely an innocent print/mailing shop, or a politically charged entity or person? A comment identifying the permit holder would be most appreciated.

__________FURTHER UPDATE____________
As a closing loose end to tie up, two highly obnoxious Freedom Club online videos have been linked to already. But that is one short of the crap they've put online the third item being a hit piece against day care workers organizing for a better tomorrow where they deserve it, often, after all, enduring the job task of dealing with somebody else's baby's soiled diapers. Anybody doing that for a living deserves caritas, not Freedom Club bullshit propaganda against them.

This link. Those people and their smugness and bags of money should not be able to propagandize any cogent human into their camp, except for camp followers.

What is the story about union lassitude in the Twin Cities Metro area? Do they need somebody to draw them a roadmap? An Uber roadmap? Or is it my ox is not being gored so don't worry be happy?

This from Ars Technica:

In a first-of-its-kind law, the Seattle City Council voted 8-0 to allow drivers for ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft to bargain collectively.

"The intent of this legislation is to create an environment where innovation can continue to happen, but not at the expense of the workers," said Councilmember Mike O'Brien, who spearheaded the proposal. "I firmly believe that this legislation is a great step in that direction."

"Uber does not share and does not care," said Councilmember Kshama Sawant. Uber drivers who take out loans to buy cars have become "trapped by debt," she added. "Uber drivers can be 'deactivated,' which is a fancy word for being fired," without cause.

The proposal, which also applies to taxis and other traditional for-hire vehicles, was passed out of committee in October. It has been opposed by both Uber and Lyft, who are expected to sue to try to overturn it. Councilmember Tom Rasmussen urged his colleagues not to be dissuaded by that.

So, get off those lazy butts, and do something to help workers at risk who'd benefit by collective bargaining power in our backyard, eh? It is not as if the Mayor of Minneapolis would be hostile to such a collective bargaining breakthrough here. I have more respect for Hodges than to think she'd not be delighted to help, if only the union top dogs started even a feeble level of barking.

Who is Freedom Club State PAC out of Champlin. It seems they put out a mudslinging ad against Jim Abeler showing a reckless disregard for the truth.

The thing was in the mailbox Monday, Dec. 14, at 3:41 pm when the mail was brought in, i.e., prepared and mailed before the end of the filing period for the SD35 open seat special election. Before the guy from NORML filed as a candidate. Did they know something about the NORML candidate's position on gas taxation? If so, how?

Who are these bozo [UPDATE: Champlin-based] operators? Reader help needed.

click thumbnail to read

Zach Phelps filed on the 14th. No earlier. Not a candidate until then, only a wannabe before filing. But a candidate on the day the Champlin folks' mailer hit the mailboxes.

The term "Sooner" comes to mind. Jumping the gun to claim territory. Never mind propriety.

__________UPDATE__________
How is that Champlin mailer offensive? Let me count the ways.

First, people who are independents or progressive favor Abeler in the GOP primary contest because he is not a bleeding extremist who makes a big point of having kissed the Taxpayer League Chairman's ring.

Of four candidates who are running, it appears only one has constrained his choices if elected in such an unnatural way. That being the extremist, Aplikowski.

I may be wrong about that, but I doubt it.

What offends most, by its parochialism of presuming only GOP candidacies matter, is the mailer's apparently incorrect statement:

Now he [Abeler] is the only candidate who refuses to rule out a new gas tax this year.

That seems a hasty representation of fact at best, certainly when published by the Champlin outlet in a political mailing printed and sent off before the cutoff date for candidate filings.

So, the fact is only Aplikowski has constrained his options from the beginning by courting favor with Harold Hamilton in their mutual anti-tax obsession, at any cost and without regard to facts which may arise in the future.

Finally, I am informed and believe that Abeler had, in fact, written to GOP Inner Party convening folks (before they barely endorsed Aplikowski after multiple ballots) that he would not be voting for a gas tax this year, were one to be proposed. Moreover, the point seems moot, since Dayton appears to have taken a gas tax increase off the table for the upcoming session.

How many ways can one attempt to channel voter thinking without voter blowback once learning the mudslinging thing out of Champlin (NOT in SD35 anyway) is wrong-headed? That we find out, Jan. 12.

Remember the mailer's main factual content and its implications for the rest of us - Aplikowski has indentured his possible legislative voting options, if elected, in a major, unneeded, and unwise way. Likely such a move will appeal to extremists. Likely many extremists will be motivated toward participation on the GOP ballot side Jan. 12. The meaning of that is a large turnout of non-extremists for that GOP primary election is needed to give voters in February the best candidate choice feasible. The better the January turnout, the better the process since large turnouts quell the possibility of zealotry bias carrying the day. Moderates and crossover progressives can help assure in January that February offers best options.

Two closing things. First, who is Smokedale Tobacco, mentioned in the above screen capture? What political history have the key people there shown in the past? Are they a political factor beyond assistance to the NORML candidacy? Reader help on that question is requested, via comments.

Second, this from the Aplikowski camp:

Andy knows that government should NOT always get what it wants, and that our National motto is “In God we trust”, not “In government we trust”.

He was the first candidate to sign the No New Taxes pledge, and has pledged to not raise the Gas Tax with the Taxpayers League of Minnesota.

We do not need a theocratic intent in state government contrary to Constitutional principles of separation between church and state. We need experience and judgment whether a GOP or DFL person ends up elected in February; and we do not need a SD35 Senator indentured at the outset to Harold Hamilton's strait-jacketed anti-tax outlook and advocacy. We surely deserve better than that on a February ballot and we can vote in January to assure it.

__________FURTHER UPDATE___________
Absentee ballots for the Jan. 12 primary will be available before the new year, starting

DECEMBER 18

and onward, and can be voted by mail or in person at the County Elections Office. Previously absentee voting at Ramsey's City Hall was an option. With this as a special election, City Hall in-person absentee voting may or may not be available. Expect an update on that possibility.

_________FURTHER UPDATE____________
Should Minnesota risk yet another Constitutional know-nothing in the legislature, per this tail-should-wag-the-dog post? There are serious issues, where fantasy and groundless distraction should not waste time.

________FURTHER UPDATE___________
Aplikowski opposes a fair minimum wage and reforms favorable to working people. Where Abeler is on such issues is a fine question, one that should be posed and answered, but where Aplikowski is on them is well defined, and deplorable.

Aplikowski has posted:

Life

I believe that life begins at conception, period. Why can we charge someone with a double homicide if they kill a pregnant woman, but if the pregnancy is terminated, that baby’s organs and tissues are harvested and sold for research, while everyone turns a blind eye? I will fight against every penny of taxpayer’s money that goes to fund abortion. I would support the inspection of abortion clinics and an investigation into any abortion provider that has broken state or federal law.

Marriage

I believe the redefinition of marriage in the legislature was a poor decision. If I was in office at the time, I would have not voted in support of that bill. My focus if elected would be to work to protect religious institutions and leaders as well as private business’ individual liberties and First Amendment rights to defend sincerely held religious beliefs.

Sane crossover given such extremism is justified, in order to protect the February election against choice haters and those who decline to understand what the First Amendment is all about.

So, where do Abeler and Aplokowski each stand on marijuana legalization, and on reforming the Citizens United affront to individuals and families in favor of anonymous big money influencing elections. Those are valid questions, as is the question of tax reform to level the playing field and keep the rich from looting all of the rest of us. Each should be held to answer such questions. Aplokowski is happy with the status quo and sees no justification for reforming taxation of the rich. He's on record. What about Abeler? Over time he has seemed to understand working with others when elections are over and the need is to govern wisely. While Roger Johnson poses the best likelihood of reform on many fronts, his chance will be in February voting. Before that, will the Republican primary yield an extremist candidate, or a more restrained one? We will know by Jan. 13.

__________FINAL UPDATE___________
Extremism in the questions asked, extremism in the Aplikowski response. That questionnaire looks as if authored by the focus group from hell.

An informative Bloomberg juxtaposition.

Online items juxtaposed here and here.

" 'The translation is, ‘we can go to Mexico,” ' he said. 'With this contract, it looks like money for workers is more important than adding jobs.' "

The headline is from this Bloomberg.com item on union bargaining with U.S. based automakers.

___________UPDATE____________
The future of auto manufacturing in the U.S., and elsewhere may be inferred from this instructive documentary video. Hand labor jobs will not disappear, but volume manufacturing will be more focused upon specialized rather than unskilled assembly line labor intensiveness, even with low-volume high labor high-priced speciality-market autos. More Tesla factory video.

"If Republican primary voters ultimately reject Trump’s populist rhetoric and Carson’s outreach to evangelical Christians, it could mean the nomination of a candidate with some of the most hawkish foreign-policy positions of any modern-day nominee from a major party. So far, those positions, however repellent to most Americans, have only served to advance Rubio’s political career."

The headline is the concluding paragraph from this item. Please read it and form whatever opinion of your own fits your thinking best. If caring, there is this websearch. Whether Rubio is a greater danger of more of the same from the neocon Iraq disaster squad than Trump is, again, something voters must judge based upon what they read, or view in online video of Rubio, and of Trump. We are not privy to any candidate's heart of hearts, beyond the last cycle's Romney 47% speech which documented his offensive elitist disdain for the majority of the nation's people (recall his message was to write off 47% so that the target was to mislead and deceive a winning percentage of the rest). And then, what about the tax and other domestic policies of the various GOP and Dem candidates, Rubio, Trump, Clinton included? What if anything has really been revealed there? Bernie seems to differ from the will of millionaires and billionaires and owes nothing in terms of purchased loyalties. And Trump, at least, is his own billionaire, not beholden yet clearly in the club. Whatever else one believes about Trump, his saying he need not be beholden to contributors appears true - even if he shares their mindset, which is a question inadequately analyzed in MSM. He has enunciated a tax policy that accords with wealth ruling, same old story, nothing populist there.
