There is a bit of disingenuous-appearing smoke being blown about Alexandria and its unwillingness to spend enough soon enough to make its wastewater discharges unobnoxious and within the reasonably clear intended scope and purview of the Clean Water Act; but the nitty-gritty is about Dayton wanting to have a new MPCA boss with spine and experience enough to make it certain that Polymet does not get away pulling any short-term, cheap, environmentally-devastating, swift stuff. Here is the lead page from an informative publication of the group, Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy.

Surely the world needs more copper. However, all costs of producing it sanely and safely to meet world needs must be worked out in ways where Minnesota's environment is not disadvantaged disproportionately, simply so that mining company shareholders can have more short-term wealth to themselves. Minnesota has no need whatsoever to subsidize wealthy mining speculators and promoters, in ways disadvantageous to its own long term environmental best interests. New and proper leadership at the MPCA makes the likelihood of managed and well policed resource exploitation greater than the likelihood of bare greed and callous penuriousness calling the shots.
